SEO Case Studies

The Back Story…

SEO is an ever evolving craft…I have been doing SEO for over 10 years and it is a constant task to stay on top of changes in Search Engine algorithms, testing, tracking, and measuring the best methods to get and keep 1st page Google rankings for target keywords.

Recently, we were testing a combination of methods to see if we could reduce the amount of time it would take to get a group of keywords that were stuck in the rankings (page 2 or more) and see how quickly we could get them “unstuck” and moved on to Page 1.

Case Study #1 – (16) Local Keywords, 2 weeks to rankings

We had taken a set of (16) long-tail keywords (keywords+city) and started tracking existing rankings on September 25th. We checked rankings for an additional 2 weeks to make sure they were relatively stable in their current rankings. Website was SEO optimized, WordPress, GMB (maps listing) SEO optimized, domain was aged (4+ years), keyword competition was medium to high for this city.

Note: on ranking numbers, there are 10 organic positions on the page and 3 positions in the Map box (3 pack):

1-10 = 1st page

11-20 = 2nd page

21- 30 = 3rd page

etc…dashes or no numbers indicate 100+

Started the campaign on October 16th, starting with an average keyword ranking for the group of #59 with a couple of keywords in the maps 3 pack and a couple as high as the 2nd page.

2 Weeks later…

Average keyword group rankings: #2 (up from #59)

Added (4) new map 3 pack rankings

Each 1st page rankings had two URLs (website links) on the page

Update: November 7th…still holding strong with slight correction, average keyword group rankings: #5. Two keywords fell to the top of the 2nd page, maintained two links per keyword.

Case Study #2 – (18) Local Keywords, 2 weeks to rankings

We had taken a set of (18) long-tail keywords (keywords+city) and started tracking existing rankings on September 25th. We checked rankings for an additional 2 weeks to make sure they were relatively stable in their current rankings. Website was SEO optimized, WordPress, domain was aged (4+ years), GMB (maps listing) SEO optimized, keyword competition was very high for this city.

Started the campaign on October 16th, starting with an average keyword ranking for the group of #52 with a no keywords in the maps 3 pack.

2 Weeks later…

Average keyword group rankings: #18 (up from #52)

Added (0) new map 3 pack rankings

Each 1st page rankings had two URLs (website links) on the page

Update: November 7th…still holding strong with slight correction, average keyword group rankings: #23. Three keywords fell to the top of the 2nd page, maintained two links per keyword.

I anticipate this group is going to need a little more time to move other keywords in the group and some additional SEO back linking to the GMB (maps). Still, satisfied with major jumps from keywords from #100+ positions to 1st Page in a short amount of time.
